Ceramic tile and porcelain tile are both man made products composed of a mixture of different types of clay. Porcelain tile is a type of very dense ceramic tile that uses two specific types clays (kaolin and feldspar) that are fired at a higher temperature than standard ceramic tile resulting in a water absorption rate of 0.5% or less becoming harder than granite. The various types of ceramic tiles have a water absorption starting at greater than 0.5% and ranging to over 20%. There are many different classifications of ceramic tile that are suitable for different applications including floor use and wall use.
